Black History Month Event in the Atlantic Region
On February 17, 2016, the Atlantic Regional Field Coordinators (RFC) participated in an African Heritage Month event organized by the PSAC’s Halifax Human Rights Committee and the PSAC’s Halifax Regional Women’s Committee.
Lynn Jones, Human Rights Activist and past Joint Learning Program RFC for the Atlantic region was the special guest speaker. Lynn began collecting news clippings in the mid-late 60s. Her heritage collection includes clippings of past and present day reflections of interest in the African (Black) Nova Scotia communities. The Collection includes topics on politics, sports, community, protests, trade unionism and Africa. Through her involvement in the community, Lynn's heritage collection covers articles about her brother, Burnley "Rocky" Jones, her WWI hero and grandfather, Jeremiah Jones and other family members.
In Nova Scotia, the African Heritage Month theme is "Legacy of Commitment – They Fought to Fight”. The theme honors the Nova Scotia Black Battalion veterans.
