National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
On December 6, 1989, 14 young women studying at the École polytechnique de Montréal were murdered because they were women.
Today, we remember and pay tribute to these women whose bright futures were stolen in an instant. Our hearts go out to their families and to all those whose lives have been forever changed by this senseless act of violence.
In Canada and around the world, violence against women remains a serious and pervasive problem that crosses all social boundaries and affects communities across the country. According to the Canadian Women's Foundation, in 2022, 184 women and girls were violently killed, mostly by men. More than half of Canadian women will be victims of violence at some point in their lives, and thousands of Indigenous women have been murdered or gone missing in Canada over the past 30 years.
On this National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women, let's reaffirm our commitment to creating workplaces where women can thrive without fear of violence. The JLP is offering a workshop entitled "Preventing Harassment and Violence in the Workplace" to raise awareness and identify actions that can be taken to ensure that the workplace is safe, respectful, inclusive and free from harassment and violence.
