International Workers’ Day
May 1 is International Workers’ Day, sometimes known as Labour Day or May Day. On this day, workers around the world take to the streets and hold rallies to celebrate and recognize their collective bargaining power, solidarity and strength.
This day is a celebration of the victories won by the labour movement, and a day to re-commit to improving workers’ conditions everywhere. “Working conditions” encompasses multiple dimensions, covering things such as workplace safety, childcare, and sick leave. These victories can change lives, ensuring security, inclusion and fair wages which make for happier workers and a healthier society.
The work toward a safer workplace is ongoing and always evolving as workers’ needs and situations change and shift, in Canada and around the world.
The Joint Learning Program’s in-person workshops and virtual discussions are all designed to encourage conversations aimed at improving working conditions for all public-service employees. Understanding the Collective Agreement and Labour-Management Consultation are learning opportunities which are available in both formats, designed to foster discussions and better understanding between management, union representatives and employees. However, every one of our topics is chosen with the intention of improving the workplace for all.
The JLP recognizes the significance of this day, and salutes all workers organizing for the greater good.
Le PAM reconnaît l’importance de cette journée, et souhaite rendre hommage à toutes les travailleuses et à tous les travailleurs qui se mobilisent pour le bien commun.
